Dangerous precedent September

-

We have celebrated the way people have helped one another during the pandemic and responded to

requests to stay at home.

But now we see civil unrest and a thuggish minority attack our police and wreck property.

This is not the way to address racism. It’s a dangerous precedent for the police to stand back and not intervene or to kneel in solidarity.

The police should be neutral and enforce law and order.

We are all obliged to follow the code of conduct set up for the good of the majority.

We can't cheery pick which laws we obey except through the tried-andtested means of peaceful protest, the ballot box, discussion and petition.

I fully support everyone's right to free speech and to demonstrate, but beware that freedom does not become licence.

With fights come responsibilities.

Scott Andrews, Ryhope.

The stars look sharper and brighter earlier at night On a late summers evening with September in sight, The harvest moon looks tired and just a little too low Is it the end of our summer? I'm beginning to think so. The sound of tractors on the warm summer breeze Ploughing straight furrows on England's green leas, Followed by a collection of birds long, short and tall Two swans and their signets pass serenely by A scene of family bonding in an elegant style, The wily young moor hen dodges into the reeds Hiding is second nature if one wants to succeed. The farmlands the uplands the moorlands and trees All reaching their climax in the late summer breeze, The wheat fields are golden, the fruit trees are ripe The North Hemisphere is moving to a well earned respite.
