Nightclub plan for former city sportswear store
Developers are planning a new nightclub for Sunderland in a former sportswear store.
As previously reported in the Echo, plans to open a pub in the building and give the structure a major facelift were approved in 2018.
This included removing ‘eyesore’ metal screen cladding, improvements to windows and brickwork and a new frontage.
A historic ornate pub front at the side of the building, in Pann Lane, is also set to be restored with new glass installed to windows.
Now fresh plans have been submitted to Sunderland City Council requesting changes to the internal layout, creating nightclub areas.
Floor plans from 2018 included a bar and customer seating area on the ground floor, two function rooms on the first floor and offices and staff changing areas on the second floor.
Applicant Roxborough Plant and Construction Ltd now wants to introduce ‘nightclub’ elements across the upper floors and toilets on a basement floor.
The original application required a noise assessment which was signed off based on the floor plans, layout of the building and ‘mitigation measures’ agreed at the time.
Due to the changes, the c o u n c i l ’s E nv i ro n m e nt a l Health team has requested more information from the applicant.
External works to improve the appearance of the former
sports store at 92 High Street West are expected to continue as normal.
A heritage statement submitted with the plans adds: “The overall aim here is the enhancementandimprovement of the current physical characteristics of the building to realign with surrounding historical artefacts and enhance this area of High Street West.”
A previous heritage statement had stipulated the development would see the historic pub front “restored to its previous grandeur”.
The proposed new frontage to the overall building was said to have been “designed in a traditional fashion and will reinforce and improve the historic character of the street”.
Sunderland City Council planning officers praised the plans in the report at the time, describing the historic pub front as a “hidden gem”.
They added the pub plans would “enliven the high street” and help boost the nighttime economy.
A decision on the bid is expected by the end of October.
