Sunderland still looking for a striker with Le Fondre the latest linked

Sunderland remain in the market for a striker this summer – with Adam Le Fondre one of the names linked with the Black Cats.

The experience­d striker h a s p rev i ou s l y p l aye d u nder Phil Parkinson at Bolton Wanderers and has been in prolific form at Sydney FC.

But the 33-year-old – who wa s l i n ke d w i th b oth th e Black Cats and Portsmouth this summer – looks set to mains Danny Graham, who trained with the Sunderland squad last week.

Discussion­s with the striker on a move to the Stadium of Light are set to resume next week.

The 35-year-old is available on a free after ending a four-and-a-half-year stay at Blackburn Rovers which started when he joined on l oa n f ro m Su n d e rl a n d i n January 2016.

“We need at least three p l aye r s t o c o m e t o m a k e us strong enough because we’ve got to be realistic that we almost need two XIs to meet the demand of the midweek games ahead of us this season,” Parkinson said.

"D a n ny i s a p l ay e r w e have spoken to, along with a number of other players in that position.

"He was in last week doing some training with us, and it was important for him to do that and work on his fitness - he's in good shape, and h e h a s n't s to p p e d p l ay i n g that long because he was at Blackburn when the Championsh­ip season continued.

"T h e r e' s a n i n t e r e s t there, as I've said previously, and we are working on that alongside a couple of other things next week."

Southampto­n defender Alfie Jones to their ranks ahead of the two side’s meeting in today’s Carabao Cup tie at the Stadium of Light.

Hull have paid an undisclose­d fee for the defender, who could feature against the Black Cats in the Stadium of Light match-up.

Jones, who has spent time on loan with St Mirren and Gillingham, has agreed a one-year deal.
