Dawdon Welfare Park & Peterlee Catholic Club ease to opening day wins

The new SSK Recruitmen­t Peterlee and District Sunday League 2020-2021 season finally got underway on Sunday, however, the scheduled programme was hit due to Covid-19 issues.

Last season was cut short in March, hence no champions of any of the three divisions was determined and all the domestic cup competitio­ns were not completed.

Only seven of the scheduled 13 matches went ahead on Sunday.

In the Premier Division, the two teams vying for the title last season, Dawdon Welfare Park and Peterlee Catholic Club, both won following a comfortabl­e win against their scheduled opponents.

D aw d o n We l f a re Pa rk passed double figures when they totally outplayed Easington Southside running out comfortabl­e 14-1 winners, thanks to goals from Jack Walker (3), Marc Ruddock (2), Callum Munro (2), Niall Crosby (2), Denver Morris (2), Paul Atkinson, Robbie Bird and Tom Price, with Michael Lee netting a consolatio­n goal for Southside.

Pete rl e e C ath o l i c C lub won thanks to goals from Jack Pounder, Scott Thompson and Gary Shaw in a comfortabl­e 3-0 win against Shotton Comrades.

T h re e m atc h e s we nt ahead in the First Division, with Jordan Williams the hero for Easington Leather Cap when he scored four goals in their opening day 6-0 win over Seaham Tthe Knack, the other two goals coming from Jack Maskell.

A brace from Joe Bell, plus efforts from Shaun Bentley and Peter Crawford paved the way for Horden JD’s Bar to beat Seaham Marlboroug­h, whose reply came from Daniel Armstrong.

Sherburn United had their work cut out before beating Thornley Harrys Bar 3-1 with goals from James Bower, Josh Chilver and Andrew Elliott. Michael Bayles netted for Harrys Bar.

In the Second Division, Hetton Lyons had little trouble in getting three points when a Mattie Wray hat-trick plus goals from Joe Mence,

Rob Talbot and Tom Ferguson saw them beat Horden United 6-1 whose consolatio­n goal came from Morgan Huntley.

Gary Barron saw red for Horden to cap off a forgettabl­e day.

Horden Legion hammer East Durham FSS 8-0, with a hat-trick from Ethan Maddison, a brace from Jake Rowan plus further goals from Steven Barron, Kevin Cook and Conner Stephenson.
