Bailey: More caps for the SocceRoos? Too Wright!

-

A key piece of Sunderland’s summer transfer business was turning Bailey Wright’s loan move into a permanent one, and the experienced Australian defender hopes his spell on Wearside can help him earn an international recall.

Wright, who has 24 Australia caps to his name, is aiming for success under Phil Parkinson this season as Sunderland aim for promotion back to the Championship at the third attempt.

And Wright, 28, hopes it will also lead him back into the international set-up.

“O f c ou r s e, a ga i n w i th f o o tb a l l yo u h ave t o ve r y much be playing well and doing well for your club to get the opportunity to be selected for the national team,” Wright told The World Game.

"That’s very much part of my plans.

"There are exciting years ahead – (with my) club, and internationally with Australia.

"International football’s been put on hold for a while until there’s a bit more certainty in the world, but there’s some good times ahead.

"We’ve still got our (World Cup) qualifying campaign, and I’m not sure what’s happening with the Copa America, but there’s a lot to look forward to.

"I want to get back selected into those international camps and be back in that starting XI.

"I had a spell there where I played a lot of games regularly and I’d like to get back to that.

"But there’s competition for places, it’s a good squad.

"So I’m very much focused on doing well here at Sunderland, being successful, and international stuff should hopefully come along with that.

"I’ll be ready for that.”
