Inquiry continues into death of motorcycli­st

Detectives are continuing to investigat­e the circumstan­ces surroundin­g the death of David Steel, who died following a crash last year.

David Steel, 50, of Ford Estate, died on July 28, 2019, four days after he was involved in a crash on Front Road.

Northumbri­a Police has confirmed an investigat­ion into the circumstan­ces around the crash and David’s death are ongoing.

An inquest hearing into Mr Steel’s death has been adjourned until October 12, as the coroner awaits the outcome of the police investigat­ion.

At a pre inquest review hearing, which took place at Sunderland Coroner’s Court at the Civic Centre, assistant co ron erKar in Welch said: “[David] died as a result of a road traffic collision. This matter has been adjourned from time to time since we await the outcome of the police investigat­ion and any decision to be taken by other agencies.”

David was riding a motorcycle that was in collision with a car shortly before 5pm on Wednesday, July 24. The 50-year-old was taken to hospital and put in an induced coma, after suffering serious injuries to his lung, ribs and neck.

David tragically died from his injuries in hospital four days later.

At the time, his grieving family paid tribute to the ‘loving man, husband and father’.

In a statement they said: “The whole family would like to thank the emergency services and members of the public who stopped at the scene to help following the collision, and those who battled to save his life.”
