A McDonald’s staff member based in Washington has tested positive for coronavirus.

Fast food giant McDonald’s has confirmed that one member of staff based at the Peel Centre branch in Barmston had to self-isolate after testing positive for COVID-19 earlier in September.

The company has said that as soon as the Washington branch was informed of the positive test result it underwent a deep clean and all employees were contacted.

McDonald’ s stressed that it has a number of safety measures in place to protect staff and customers, including staff temperature checks at the start of each shift.

A McDonald’s spokeswoman said: “Earlier this month one employee at our Peel Centre restaurant self-isolated, having tested positive for COVID-19.

"As a precautionary measure the restaurant was deep cleaned and all employees were contacted.

"We have a number of safety measures in place to help keep our people safe, including temperature checks at the start of each shift, face coverings, regular hand washing and the use of hand sanitiser.”

It comes as coronavirus cases continue to rise across the North East, with figures released by Public Health England on Monday, confirming that there are now 20,75 cases in the region.

Meanwhile a number of schools and businesses across Wearside and the North East have been affected by confirmed cases of COVID-19 in recent weeks, leading to temporary full and partial closures.
