The academy graduate has put pen to paper on a threeyear deal at the Stadium of Light after a breakthrough summer in which he caught the eye of Phil Parkinson during pre-season.

Neil, 18, has been with the Black Cats since the age of nine and was a regular in the Under-23s setup last season.

And that form brought reported interest from Leeds United, Newcastle United and Wolves over the summer m o nth s w i th Su n d e rl a n d seemingly facing a fight to keep hold of the highly-rated midfielder.

But it’s a battle they have now won, with Neil having spoken of his delight at committing his future to his boyhood club.

“I’m delighted to sign my first professional contract,” he said, speaking to safc.com.

"I’ve supported the club for as long as I can remember, and it’s always been my goal to get into the first team. Signing this contract will give me a better opportunity to do that.”

Manager Phil Parkinson added: “We’re very pleased th at a n ew d ea l h a s b e e n agreed with Dan.

“He’s a good young player and it’s important that we keep our talented youngsters at the club. Now, his challenge now is to force his way into the first-team picture.”

Sunderland have also confirmed that Neil will captain the Under-23s side for the remainder of this season, having done so against Leeds United Under-23s on Monday afternoon.

Neil is also expected to feature for the Black Cats in their upcoming EFL Trophy fixtures.
