Man dies in accident on main roundabout

A 40-year-old man has died following a crash on a major Washington road.

Detectives are now appealing for informatio­n following the fatal crash which occurred at 9.50am on Sunday, October 4.

Emergency services were called to a one-vehicle crash on the Havannah Roundabout at the junction of the s outh b oun d A194M slip road and A182 Washington Highway.

It is understood that a Renault Scenic was travelling southbound taking the A194M slip road when, for reasons yet to be establishe­d, it collided with some street furniture.

Sad ly th e 4 0-year-old male driver, who was the only occupant in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The next of kin have been notified and are receiving support from specialist officers at this difficult time, Northumbri­a Police say.

The Havanah roundabout and A182 were closed for more than five hours to allow crash scene investigat­ors to assess the area and a clear-up operation to take place. The North East Ambulance Service sent five resources including a hazardous area response team to the scene.

An inv es tiga ti on has been launched into the cir cumstances­s urrounding the collision and detectives are now appealing for anyone with informatio­n to get in touch.

Sergeant Steve Armstrong said :“This is a tragic incident that has sadly resulted in the death of the male driver.”
