Rolls-Royce secured a 2-0 Division Four win at home to Durham Bede Lodge in the Sunderland & District Over40s League.

Rolls, despite missing six of the previous week’s squad, took the lead late in the first half when Ronnie Dunlop flicked on a header from a throw-in and Davy Lomax pounced at the back post to fire in from close range.

W i th 1 0 m i nute s l e f t , Rolls sealed the win when Jonny Nichols broke away and found Micky Agnew with a great ball, to score with a left-foot shot from 15 yards.

New keeper Kev Agnew and right-back Stephen Murray shone for Rolls, but man of the match was Michael Leach.

Willow Pond took an early lead at home to The Doxy Lad after Ralph Dodd played a defence-splitting pass to Gary Golightly, who fired past keeper Dean Broadbent.

Pond doubled their lead when midfielder Gary Barker unleashed a 35 yard pile driv

er that went in off the underside of the bar.

Pond made it 3-0 after Brian Adamson flicked on a ball to Golightly, who cut inside, beating his marker to lob Broadbent from 40 yards.

But the away side never laid down and got a consolation goal after a home defensive mix-up allowed Andy Wilson in at the back post to

fire past Pond keeper John Davis.

Penshaw Catholic Club finally got their Premier Division campaign off to a good start with a thrilling 6-5 win at St Mary’s Yarm.

Pe n s h aw l o o ke d l i ke a t e a m t h at h a d n’ t p l ay e d a l ea g ue ga m e fo r s eve n months while their opponents with two games under their belts were quicker to the ball, forcing the Penshaw midfield to make mistakes allowing their forwards into the channels and draw level on three occasions and then take a 4-3 lead.

However Penshaw levelled again before half-time and raced into a second-half 6-4 lead which looked like sealing the points but back came St Mary’s to reduce the deficit with 20 minutes to go.

Penshaw packed the midfield and stifled any further attacks to see the game out and make sure the points went back to Penshaw.

Chris Moody, man of the match Paul Hodgson and the hard-working Mark Liddle 2 scored two apiece for Penshaw.
