Ryhope and Red Star reach first round proper of the FA Vase

Ryhope CW midfielder Olly Hotchkiss wants his side to build on their impressive 4-0 win at Campion in the FA Vase second qualifying round.

Both sides had been reduced to ten men by the time th e h a l f - t i m e wh i s tl e h ad been blown after hosts defender Ben Bodie and Ryhope winger Denver Morris were shown red cards for violent conduct.

Three goals in 20 minutes from Robbie Bird, Kyle Davis and James Ellis gave Gary Pearson and Chris McCabe’s side a commanding lead as they looked to secure a place in the first round for fourth time in five seasons.

A late goal from defender Ben Riding only added to a fine performanc­e in West Yo rk s h i re a s a l l th oug ht s turned towards Monday’s first round draw.

“I th oug ht we d i d ve r y well,” explained Hotchkiss.

“There was a late change to the team, I was expected to be on the bench, but young Dave (Vincent) and pulled up in the warm-up and I’ve been given an opportunit­y to play.

“I thought the lads were terrific, even eleven against eleven, I thought we were the better side.

“But especially when it went ten against ten, we really dominated and deserved to get into the next round.

“Any win at the moment is a really good win because with Covid, everything is stopstart at the moment.

“It shows great character and hopefully the club can build on it.”

Seaham Red Star will join Ryh o p e i n th e d raw a f te r they came through a penalty shoot-out at Garforth Town.

The hosts took the lead eight minutes before halftime with a goal from Sam Denton.

But Mark Collingwoo­d’s men took the tie to penalties when Andrew Johnson netted from the spot just before the hour.
