A big welcome to first local babies born in 2021

Families across Wearside are delighted to start 2021 by welcoming their little bundles of joy into the world on New Year’s Day.

Sunderland Royal hospital welcomed five New Year’s Day baby on it’s Maternity ward and South Tyneside’s Birthing Centre delivered one newborn on the morning of Friday, January 1.

The first baby delivered at South Tyneside’s Birthing Centre was Tommy Lee Wilkinson, born at 4.10am, weighing 7lb 4oz. Parents Holly Stubbs and Lee Wilkinson will now return to their home in Seaham with their newborn son.

Tommy is the second child to be born to mother Holly, 24.

Big brother Lewis Wilkinson, who will be three-year-sold in February is“very excited” to meet his new sibling.

Newborn Tommy was due on December 23, but finally made an appearance on New Years Day.

Mum Holly said: “We are pleased to start the new year off with some happy news!”

Lee, a self-employed brick layer, and Holly, a fashion embroidery business owner, are ‘overjoyed’ with their new addition to the family.

Grandmothe­r Sue said: “We are so excited and we can’t wait to meet him.

"Holly has been so excited and it’s lovely that he’s been born on New Year’s Day – we’re all over the moon.”

It has been a busy day at Sunderland’s Royal hospital with five new born babies being delivered on the first day of the year.

A spokespers­on said: “It’s been a busy day but we are pleased that we have delivered five healthy babies.

"All the babies are doing well and it’s fantastic that so many have been born to see in the new year.”
