Make some noise for our Covid heroes

-

Tonight’s the night to make some noise for the heroes in our community. Once again we are backing this national effort which, in the early days of this pandemic, united our community in hailing the carers putting their lives on the line to help others.

This show of solidarity brought neighbours together to honour the NHS and healthcare staff. Tonight’s Clap for Heroes must be no different.

Criticism of the original Clap for Carers initiative gathered momentum amid claims the effort was being politicised. Many argued that financial support was more important than a short burst of noise from the public every evening. They are not wrong, but then why not have both?

And it was clear from many of the comments we received from NHS workers and others going above and beyond during the pandemic that the support was gratefully received.

The organiser of the event, Dutch national Annemarie Plas, eventually announced an end to the ritual in May of last year because she shared some of those concerns.

Now she feels the time is right to bring it back.

She said: "We are bringing back the 8pm applause, in our 3rd lockdown.

"I hope it can lift the spirit, of all of us. Carers teacher, homeschooling parents, those who shield and ALL who is pushing through this difficult time! Please join & share! #clapforheroes."

So tonight, grab a pot and wooden spoon from the kitchen, clear your throat and once again make some noise for the Covid heroes in your community.
