Health chief’s call for people to help beat virus
Sunderland’s Director of Public Health is urging people to keep their guard up as Covid infection rates in the city continue to remain high.
The latest data suggests that figures haven't really changed recently and case rates remain high at more than double what they were before Christmas.
Gerry Taylor, executive director of public health and integrated commissioning, said: "Our infection rates are still very high and the number of people in hospital in the city is rising.
"My plea to everyone is to keep your guard up and continue playing your part to deny this virus the opportunity to spread further.
"Please stay at home unless your reason for leaving falls into one of the few reasons we are permitted to leave our homes, including to exercise, shop for essentials and work if you cannot do so from home.”
He added: "The good news is that the vaccination programme in the city is progressing at pace with more than 80% of residents in care homes now vaccinated and more than 50% of the care home staff who look after them. And our colleagues in the NHS are continuing efforts to vaccinate our most vulnerable residents.
"While this is undoubtedly good news, to protect yourself and others, it is vital that even after you have been vaccinated you continue to follow the national restrictions and the guidance around hands, face and space.
"I know January is traditionally a difficult month, and this year is so much more challenging than most so I'd like to thank everyone for all they are doing to fight this virus. By working together, we can protect our friends, families and communities."
