How to have your cheesy chips the Wembley way!

Sunderland fans can’t watch their heroes in Wembley stadium - but they can still have the cheesy chips experience.

A special edition of the delicacy is being launched by a Seaham-based home baking delivery service.

Tarts & Traybakes has launched a Cheesy Chips Matchday pie in celebration of Sunderland’s appearance in the Papa John’s Trophy final.

The bakery service normally produces brownies, cake traybakes and afternoon teas and has previously produced a home delivery service for match day pies.

Now it has turned its sights to a unique culinary treat in time for Sunderland’s big day at Wembley.

Pre-orders are now being taken for the Cheesy Chips Matchday Pie range which will be delivered on Saturday, March 13 and Sunday, March 14 in time for kick-off.

It is available in three flavours – Cheesy Chips Pie, Cheesy Chips and Balti Sauce Pie and Cheesy Chips and Chicken Balti Pie.

Tarts & Traybakes founder, Nicola Ward said: “We’ve all heard the Sunderland chant of ‘cheesy chips on Wembley Way’ , so we thought we’d make a matchday pie to reflect thi s which is a bit tongue in cheek, but tasty and something different all the same.”

The pie range is made up of homemade thin crust pastry with a filling of chips covered in a specially produced

cheese sauce in one with the addition of a Balti sauce and Chicken Balti sauce in the others.

Nicola added: “We didn’t want the pie to be too dry inside which it most likely would be with a bog-standard cheesy chips order from a chippy, so we have also produced a homemade cheese sauce which won’t dry the pie out after baking.

"The addition of the Balti sauce in the other pies is another twist on the typical matchday pie and tastes

delicious…akin to a curry, chips and cheese naan all rolled into one!”

The Cheesy Chips Matchday Pie is the fourth matchday pie produced by Tarts & Traybakes following in the footsteps of their Chicken Balti match pie and Mince and Onion match pie.

Nicola added: “We normally produce brownies, traybakes and afternoon teas, however with lockdown in effect and no fans attending games, we thought the idea of a home

delivery service of a matchday pie to those watching the match at home on TV might help lift everyone’s spirits in the present climate.”

“The idea has been a triumph with all pies selling out on each occasion. The Cheesy Chips Matchday Pie range is served with a pot of homemade mushy peas and a pot of homemade gravy and costs £5 including delivery within 10-miles of Seaham.”

Tarts & Traybakes was

launched in 2020 by Nicola when she was made redundant from her role in aviation following the start of the pandemic.

Cheesy chip pies are just one offering that Black Cats fans can get for cup final day.
