Witnesses plea for collision at junction

Collision investigat­ors are asking for witnesses to come forward after a biker was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Passing paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service were the first on the scene of the crash, which involved a car and a motorbike at the junction of the A1231 Wessington Way and the Northern Spire

Bridge on Saturday, February 27, at 5.15pm.

The woman who had been on the bike was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary Hospital in Newcastle Hospital by road, although the Great North Air Ambulance’s helicopter did attend the scene, close to the Sainsbury’s Sunderland North store.

The route was closed off in the aftermath of the incident by police while the woman was treated and the road cleared of debris, with traffic diverted away from the area.

Yesterday, Northumbri­a Police said it is asking anyone who saw what happened to get in touch as inquiries continue.

A spokespers­on said: "Shortly after 5.15pm on Saturday we received a report of a collision involving a car and a motorbike on the A1231 Wessington Way near the junction with the Northern Spire Bridge. “Thefemaler­iderof the bike was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatenin­g injuries.

"The road was temporaril­y closed to allow services to care for the patient and carry out inquiries.”
