Suspected theft left an elderly man in hospital
Northumbria Police is investigating a suspected theft in the Thorney Close area of Sunderland that left a man in his 80s needing hospital treatment.
Officers were called to an address just off Thorndale Road in Sunderland by the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) at around 3.45pm on Sunday.
When police attended, they found a man, said to be aged in his 80s, lying on the floor of the house in a confused state.
The man reported to officers that two younger males had entered the address and made off with a quantity of cash and bank cards from his wallet.
Northumbria Police has confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the incident.
It is understood that the victim was then taken to hospital as a precaution with minor injuries.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At about 3.45pm yesterday (Sunday) we were contacted by the ambulance service to a report of concern for the welfare of a male at an address off Thorndale Road, Sunderland.
“Officers attended and found a man in his 80s in a confused state lying on the floor.
"He reported that two younger males had entered the address and made off with a quantity of cash and bank cards from his wallet.
“An investigation is ongoing into the incident.
"The victim was taken to hospital as a precaution with minor injuries.
