It’s been a difficult 12 months for the high street with more people than ever before turning to online retail with shops closed due to the pandemic.

Del Ramsay: It’s cheaper more convenient and it’s one click and your sorted. No endless road works, or paying to park. Spend more quality time with my family. Sunderland shopping centre is over priced.

Martin Matthews:

I get 2 days a week off. Why would I spend 1 of them traipsing round a town centre when I can do it all from the comfort of my armchair.

Jane Crossley: I love online shopping did it long before covid cant remember last time I went into a shop apart from my local corner one easy 5 year save all my money for abroad ...

Emma Hall: If we didn’t have internet abs times haven’t moved on shops would still be there but in a few more years as technology advances everything will be online.

Mandy Brown: It would be great to see the echo reporting on the number of new business that have opened in the city centre in the last year and not just concentrat­e on doom and gloom. There has been a lot of good in the city centre in such hard times

Barry Hull: In 10 years there be no town centre shops no coffee shops as nobody be around .... thank you amazon and the like and all who shop on line

Phil Paisley: I don't understand the appeal of online shopping it's like your buying stuff blind unable to see the quality. False economy!!

Keiron Tate: It's going to be a struggle getting anyone to take over our Debenhams. huge unit, going to be a shame if it sits empty for years

Susan Hunter: What else are people supposed to do, the shops are closed

Axel Tye: This is not the work of the pandemic it’s been like this for 15-20 years now
