Volunteers take on fly-tippers in the Dene

Members of a new litterpicking group will work together to tackle fly-tipping in their community.

Silke Harvery, who lives in Dawdon, said the extent of the problem in the Hazel Dene area inspired her to set up a litter-picking team.

And the group’s first litter pick is set to take place on Monday, April 19, with a weekly litter pick then taking place each Monday throughout April and May.

She told the Echo that the extent of fly-tipping and waste disposal in the area had made some entry points into the Dene almost impassable.

"There’s been some occasional littering and fly-tipping going on in the past,” Silke said.

"But it’s really come to a head now. It’s got to the point whereby you can’t walk down the steps into the area because of all the rubbish.

She also hopes to prevent the area becoming spoiled by its growing rubbish problem, which she says has worsened noticeably during Lockdown 3.

Silke added: "I only live around the corner and I walk my dog there every day. I keep seeing it in such a state and think that something needs doing about it.

“It’s really lovely for people to enjoy – when it’s tidy.” Twenty volunteers have contacted Silke about joining the group, but due to Covid restrictions the upcoming litter picks will have to be carried out in groups of six.

Times for each pick are still to be confirmed.
