Passport warning to European travellers
People looking forward to a European holiday are being urged to make sure their paperwork is in order.
With post-restrictions anticipation, this summer potentially presents the first time many people will face new rules on travel since the UK’s exit from the European Union.
The Passport Office and Post Office is warning hopeful travellers that passport applications could take up to 10 weeks – which is triple the usual waiting time – as the proposed end of the travel ban draws near.
The Post Office says 49% of people it polled said they are considering taking a trip abroad once Covid restrictions lift, with 36% already planning to head to Europe.
But 37% also admitted they don’t feel confident booking a holiday to Europe because of the changes which have happened since Brexit.
Travellers are also not sure of when their European Health Insurance Card expires – or what it covers.
Additionally, 34% claim they never or only sometimes purchase travel insurance when they go on holiday to Europe.
Ed Dutton, Post Office spokesman, said: “It’s not surprising that many of us are keen to get away to Europe once Covid-19 restrictions allow, but this hotly anticipated summer is the first time holidaymakers will face new rules since the UK’s exit from the European Union.
"The key thing is to plan ahead, renewing your passport can take a few weeks, so check its expiration now before you even think about booking a trip to avoid any last minute disappointments.”
