Council tax discounts reminder to residents

-

As the new financial year gets under way, County Durham residents – especially those with certain health conditions – are being reminded to take advantage of the council tax discounts available.

Durham County Council is advising residents to check to see if they are eligible for a reduction,or even an exemption, on their council tax bill.

This includes people who have been diagnosed by their doctor as suffering from a condition or illness classed as a severe mental impairment such as Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and severe learning difficulties.

Those who are eligible and live alone do not pay any council tax, while those living with another person qualify for a 25 per cent reduction.

People can find out more – including how to claim – at www.durham.gov.uk/smiorby calling 03000 264 000 and selecting the‘ council tax’ option. Mary Readman, head of transactional services at the council, said: “I would urge anyone who thinks they may be eligible to find out more.

“These discounts and exemptions are available and could make a significant difference to people’s lives.”

Council tax discounts are also available for anyone who lives alone, residents with severe disabilities where the properties have been adapted, students, student nurses, apprentices, National Traineeship trainees and care leavers.
