Seaham Red Star manager Mark Collingwood could not hide his disappointment after his side saw their FA Vase run ended by a late goal at North Ferriby.

The two sides created little during a scrappy encounter at the Dransfield Stadium until a late goal from Villagers striker Joel Shortland put his side through to the last 32 of the competition.

The defeat ended Red S tar’ s hopes of reaching the fourth round for only the third time in their history and their conquerors will now host West Auckland Town next Saturday.

Collingwood reflected on an underwhelming Seaham display and admitted their hosts did what they had to do to continue their own Vase run.

He told The Echo :“I said before the game that if anyone expecting a classic would be left disappointed.

“It was a flat game, it was boring, and that was what I expected with the break both sides have had over the last few months.

“The goal was a tired decision from us, it was a tired executionof a pass that’ s let them in, and we are all obviously disappointed. But we did not do enough, we were just a yard off all over the pitch and they weren’t much better than us.

“The simple fact is that North Ferriby did what they had to do to get through.”

The defeat against the Villagers brings an end to Red Star’s campaign and Col ling wood will turn his focus toward next season over the coming days. He admitted that he will have to make some “heartwrenching” decisions as he looks to improve his squad over the summer months.

“We will all take a couple of days to reflect on the defeat and the season as a whole,” explained the Red Star boss.

“Then we will start planning for next season and seeing what we need to do.

“It’s going to be a case of making some heart-wrenching decisions because some lads have been with me a long time. The hard part really start snow, and I want to get a quick start and bring in players that will really improve us.”

Birtley Town caused a major Durham Challenge Cup shock by inflicting a 2-1 defeat on Vase finalists Consett.

The Hoops took a deserved lead with a goal by Joe Barwick but his strike was cancelled out by an equaliser on the hourmark from Consett defender Simon Jakab.

However, the Northern League Division Two side progressed thanks to a dramatic late winner from Kelvin Thear.
