Man arrested after roundabout smash
Police investigating a crash involving a BMW believed to have been taken from outside a Sunderland house following a domestic incident have issued an update into the inquiry.
Northumbria Police arrested a 20-year-old man in the early hours of Tuesday, in the wake of a collision with the roundabout which links the A19 interchange at Murton with the A182 leading to Dawdon.
TheA182fromthe roundabout to the Fox Cover Industrial Estate was sealedofffollowingthesmash at4.40amuntil11.30am,asinquiries were launched, while theexitsliproadfromtheA19 southbound was also closed off for some time.
The force has today said the man, who was taken to hospital by the North East Ambulance Service for treatment for non-life threatening injuries, has now been released on police bail as the investigations continue.
He was arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, which followed a domestic incident in the Grangetown areaofSunderland,anddrivingwhileundertheinfluence of alcohol.
Police said the report of the missing vehicle wasmadeat4.20am following a disturbance at a property and officers spotted the BMW a short time later travelling on the A19 from East Herrington.
They signalled for the vehicle to stop, but it drove off at high speed before colliding with the roundabout at the top of the slip road from the southbound carriageway of the A19.
