STORY:

Plans to demolish the cell block at Sunderland’s former police HQ have been given the green light as part of a major regeneration project. The Gilbridge Police Station lies close to Keel Square and the ongoing Riverside Sunderland development and has been empty since Northumbria Police moved out in 2015.

Christopher Milburn:

Really should flatten it round to where it links to the older buildings, and regenerate the site with something that isn’t a relic of 60s concrete block construction.

Kenny Sproat:

Make it into a homeless combination for people who are living on the streets, it’d be a great idea.

John Robinson: What about tidying it up a bit and letting small business use it to sell their stuff; a bit like the church in Tynemouth. Just charge them for the electricity, this would help them move to the next step.

James Ronnie Ryan:

Make it into student accommodation, like everything else!

Elaine Dickinson: Exactly how many offices and student accommodation does one city need. Council have no vision for the future for Sunderland.

Kathy Stewart:

Would this not be ideal for homeless accommodation?

Pam Todd: Excellent news. Great to see money invested in Sunderland.

Andy Hunter: A business hub. Is that not what they’re building just over the road next to the new council building?

Ross Byrne: About time its an eyesore.

Eileen Joyce: Why do people get angry over student accommodation?

Deb Pulling: Because every and I mean every empty building in Sunderland has been turned into student accommodation, don't you think there is enough buildings for students in Sunderland as it is?

Edward Philip Hilton:

Would you rather they stand empty and boarded up? Retail are not buying, can't see much commercial use when there are empty office buildings all over the city.
