Wet Wet Wet will perform live online for one night only!
Livestreaming has been a recurring theme for artists during the pandemic but Wet Wet Wet are aiming to do it just the once before heading back on the road.
The Scottish chart-toppers from the 1980s and ’90s will be doing their first and only online show at 7.30pm on Saturday April 17 and are due to tour their new album in the autumn.
But the band, well known for Sweet Little Mystery and With A Little Help From My Friends, has been far from idle while the coronavirus outbreak has paused many musicians’ normal touring and recording patterns.
The band has been working hard on new album The Journey, also finding time to entertain fans via their Wet Wet Wet from Home sessions.
This saw them rearranging original classics into online videos which were viewed by tens of thousands.
And with the country still under lockdown, the band recently got together in Glasgow to record a full live set which includes fan favourites such as Temptation, Angel Eyes, Goodnight Girl, Julia Says, Love Is All Around and many more.
Wet Wet Wet will stream one-hour exclusive The Journey Out Of Lockdown show in association with the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy charity.
Band member Tommy Cunningham said: “For live musicians COVID-19 has all but kidnapped and darkened our stages for the past year. You never realise how much you miss something until it’s not there. When the opportunity arose for Wet Wet Wet to do our only live show in lockdown, it was poignant that it was in tandem with the charity Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy. Doing the job we all love whilst trying to shine some light on them has always been important to us.”
Virtual tickets for the show cost £8.95 via Ticketmaster but fans can also make an optional donation to Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy.
Wet Wet Wet’s Neil Mitchell said: “Recently we have all had other things at the forefront of our minds – life and death for some of us. Because of this, charitable organisations are not necessarily a priority so it’s important that we try our best to support these fantastic causes.”
Frontman Kevin Simm, who joined in 2018 after original singer Marti Pellow went solo, is itching to get back on stage. He said: “It’s great just to be able to perform live again even without an audience present, although we would all hugely prefer to see the faces of our fans rather than just video cameras in front of us. Enjoy the stream and we’re very much hoping that the journey out of lockdown continues so we can see everybody on the road again really soon”.
A 20-city British tour has been organised from October 28 to November 21. It will start in Perth, Scotland and is due to end in Newcastle after touring the length of the country.
