Thieves broke into a newlylaunched Sunderland city centre business to steal drink during an early hours breakin.

The Fat Unicorn Kitchen and Stores, in Bridge Street, was targeted on Sunday, and devastated bosses have told customers it could disrupt trade in the days ahead.

The business has opened as part of the redevelopment the Hutchinson’s Building, which includes Mackie’s Corner and takes in the junction of High Street West and Bridge Street.

Run by husband and wife Scott and Amanda Martin, the pair have now been left estimating the cost of that the incident will have on the business.

Amanda said: “This is actually the second break-in that we’ve experienced however during the first one, an empty till draw was taken so we were able to bounce back quite quickly from that.

“But this one is having a big impact on us trading as we need to have the window replaced and replenish the stock that was stolen.

"We’re trying to work out

how much it will all cost, the stock lost and needing the window repair is around £600 however the loss of earning due to not being able to open, in total, it’s probably over £1,000.”

The break-in comes just days after the deli experienced a strong week of trading as lockdown restrictions eased and Amanda has praised the support that they have received.

She added: “It has come at a really bad time, we have just opened, invested in outdoor furniture and things were starting to look up rather than the constant worry during lockdown.

"There are just no words for what has happened really.

"But we are thankful for the huge outreach from our customers and other independent businesses in Sunderland who have shown us support since this has happened.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 3.45am we received a report of a burglary at Fat Unicorn Kitchen and Stores in Sunderland.

“It was reported that offenders broke into the premises and stole a quantity of alcohol.

“An investigation is ongoing to trace those responsible.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact police via the Tell Us Something page of our website or by calling 101.”
