West End smash-hit Dreamgirls heads to the Empire

multi-award winning West End production of Dreamgirls is set to come to the Sunderland Empire in 2022 as part of the show’s first UK tour.

Theatre-goers will be able to catch performanc­es of the musical at the Sunderland Empire on High Street West from Wednesday, February 23 next year – with tickets on sale from 10am on Tuesday, April 27.

The musical, which is based on the show business aspiration­s and successes of acts such as James Brown, Jackie Wilson and The Supremes follows the story of a young female singing trio, named Effie, Lorrell and Deena, who are collective­ly called ‘The Dreams’.

Created by Tom Eyen and Henry Krieger, the show first appeared on Broadway in New York City 35 years ago – with a regular spot on London’s West End since December

2016.

As the tour gets under way, audiences will be treated to classic songs such as ‘And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going’, ‘Listen’ and ‘One Night Only’.

ITV’s The Voice 2019 finalist Nicole Raquel Dennis will play the leading role of Effie White and the producThe tion will be directed and choreograp­hed by Olivier and Tony Award winning Casey Nicholaw.

The “West End of the North” is preparing to open its door once again to customers next month, having been closed since March last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The next stage of the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown, set to go ahead on May 17, will allow indoor theatre performanc­es to reopen.

The High Street West venue will reopen on May 27 with One Night of Elvis – Lee 'Memphis' King.
