Library service bid to boost mental health

-

Library bosses in Sunderland are aiming to reduce loneliness and support people’s mental health with a new reading initiative.

Sunderland City Council’s libraries are promoting the Reading Well campaign – which aims to support the mental health of children, young people and adults as part of the country’s Covid-19 recovery.

The books and accompanying leaflets from the Reading Agency are available from the

City Library at the Museum and Winter Gardens, Washington Town Centre and Houghton libraries.

All of the books have been chosen and recommended by leading health professionals, as well as people living with conditions and their relatives and carers.

For children, the book list is targeted at children aged from seven to 11.

Reading Well for young people recommends expert endorsed books about mental health with advice and information around anxiety, stress and OCD, also difficult experiences including bullying and exams.

The adult book collections are recommended by health professionals and aim to support mental health, wellbeing and mindfulness.

Victoria French, Assistant Director for Culture & Events, said: “Covid 19 and the current global pandemic has placed a major mental health strain on both adults, young people and children alike.

"As we look forward to the road to recovery, collections like Reading Well will prove invaluable in improving mental health, including dealing with difficult feelings and experiences.”
