Amber is the new Miss Sunderland
The newly crowned Miss Sunderland is set to compete for the national title of Miss England in June.
Amber Peters, who is 22 years of age and who comes from Silksworth, won a virtual competition which was held over the last two months to receive the Miss Sunderland crown.
The North East pageant had to be held virtually due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
As a result, contestants had to receive support in a public vote.
They also had to pre-record an introduction, catwalk and talent video as well as take part in a Zoom interview with the judges.
Amber, who currently works as a model and is hoping to study English in London later this year, has revealed how she became involved with the competition.
She said: “I just filled in an application on a whim and entered the heats for the North East.
"Everyone competing had to enter a public vote so I had all my family and friends sharing it on social media so I could reach the top six of the competition.
"This year’s regional final was all virtual due to the Covid pandemic and I was invited to a Zoom interview with the judges during which we had to make a good impression.
"I was so surprised when I won.
“The email sounded like a rejection at first, it was only when I got further down it that I realised that I had done it.
"I have never entered a pageant before so to get this far is just wonderful,” she told the Echo.
Now Amber will go on to represent Sunderland in the national competition in June where she will raise money for a charitable cause that is very close to her heart.
She added: "I think a lot of people overlook Sunderland and the North East as a whole so I’m proud to be able to represent where I am from.
“I’m excited and confident for the next part of the competition.
"I think I’m most excited to meet all the other girls as win or lose, it is important to have fun along the way and raise for charity.
"I’ve decided to choose R.E.A.C.H who help people who have been victims of sexual assault as it is a cause close to my heart,” explained Amber.
