Man left with serious injuries after assault

A man has suffered a fractured jaw, eye socket and broken nose following a brutal attack in the Grindon area of Sunderland.

Detectives say that the attack took place at about 11.25am on Friday, April 16, on G art land Road in Grind on at the junction with Gilbert Road.

It is reported that two men got out of a white Vauxhall Astra and assaulted a 40-year-old man on a grass verge by punching and kicking him repeatedly, before setting what is described as a brown Staffordsh­ire bull terrier on him.

Police say the two offenders made off from the scene in the Astra and that they are believed to be known to the victim, who needed hospital treatment.

Inquiries into the assault are ongoing and officers are asking for witnesses to come forward.

Detective Constable David Holcro ft, of Northumbri­a Police, said :“This attack happened in broad daylight in a busy area. We believe there will be people who witnessed the incident and we areas king them to do the right thing and come forward.

“We are committed to ensuring those responsibl­e are brought to justice for their crimes. There is no place for violence on our streets and we are using every tactic at our disposal in order to get to the bottom of what happened.
