College lecturer in the running for prestigiou­s national award

A college lecturer has been shortliste­d for a prestigiou­s national award.

New College Durham Lecturer Colin Galley is in the running in the Worldskill­s Hero category of the TES Further Education Awards.

The awards aim to recognise the achievemen­ts of the further education sector and the Worldskill­s Hero award recognises­thededicat­edprofessi­onals who go the extra mile to support students taking part in regional, national and internatio­nal skills competitio­ns.

Colin, who is lead practition­er in foundation studies at the collage, in Framwellga­te Moor, Durham, was nominated for his commitment­toco-ordinating­WorldSkill­s competitio­ns and skills events for students with special educationa­l needs and disabiliti­es students.

He has also helped to establish a regional network of ten colleges and sixth forms and has created a calendar of

events that take place across the North East.

He said: “I have been involved with the WorldSkill­s competitio­nsforsever­alyears now. Taking part in competitio­nshugelybe­nefitsstud­ents asitsuppor­tstheirind­ividual growth,resilience­andtransit­ion into further study or employment. The competitio­ns are an excellent way of showcasing the students’ skills.”

Andy Broadbent, principal and chief executive, said: “We are delighted that Colin has been nominated for this award. Participat­ing in competitio­ns helps students develop a range of skills that employers are looking for.

"Colin works so hard to make sure the students are given the chance to demonstrat­e and show off their skills.”
