-

A support hub for military veterans is celebrating a £1,000 grant boost to back its work.

East Durham Veterans Trust, which is based in Seaham, has been handed the cash by Persimmon Homes Durham through its Community Champions scheme.

The scheme supports charities and good causes at grassroots level in the areas in which it builds.

The Trust works with veterans and their families across County Durham, providing counselling and support and promoting wellbeing.

Andrew Camiss, chairman of the Trust, said: “East Durham Veterans Trust provides services that were not available previously and the veterans’ hub in Seaham is also used as a drop-in centre for anyone who may have a problem that they need help with.

“We would like to thank Persimmon Homes Durham for supporting us and gifting us £1,000 to help with our service.”

Christine Cooper, sales director for Persimmon Homes Durham, said: “We strongly believe in supporting the communities where we build and are delighted to make the donation to the east Durham Veterans Trust through our Community Champions campaign.”

The Community Champions initiative invites groups and charities who have already worked hard to raise money themselves to apply for match-funding of up to £1,000.

Each month the Bowburnbased builder donates up to £2,000 to local community groups.

Across Persimmon’s other 31 operating areas, £64,000 is dished out every month – a total of £768,000 a year.
