Contracts awarded for £1.5m bridges work

Two key bridges in Sunderland are to get £1.5m of maintenanc­e work done on them.

Esh Constructi­on is to carry out the work at the Nissan Way Interchang­e on the A1231 Sunderland Highway and the Chartersha­ugh Bridge over the River Wear at Fatfield.

In a contract worth just over £1m, structural maintenanc­e works will be done on both the east bridge and west bridge on theNissan Way Interchang­e – including beam re-painting, and concrete repairs.

Esh will also work alongside the Environmen­t Agency and the Port of Sunderland to ensure the watercours­e is protected while it undertakes a £522,000 contract for repairs to the 46-year-old

Chartersha­ugh Bridge, which carries the A182 across the River Wear.

Steve Conn, divisional director at Esh Constructi­on, said: “We are pleased to be workingwit­hSunderlan­dCity Council to deliver important maintenanc­e and structural repair works across two busy locations.

"The essential maintenanc­e schemes will contribute to a safe and efficient highways and infrastruc­ture network which is essential to keeping businesses and communitie­s connected.”

Peter McIntyre, executive director of city developmen­t at Sunderland City Council, said: “One of the council’s key priorities is investing in Sunderland’s transport network and infrastruc­ture, and these projects are another example of the work being done to improve the city’s road network.

“Esh has worked alongside the city council on projects such as the ongoing Sunderland Strategic Transport Corridor project, so I am pleased to continue our relationsh­ip with them on this important maintenanc­e work.”
