A woman from Sunderland was surprised to find a lamb wandering around her garden as she went to collect milk from her doorstep before police arrived and took it away in a police van.

Police were called to Forbes Terrace, Ryhope, yesterday morning, after receiving reports of a lamb wandering around a garden.

Amy Scollen’s neighbour called officers after hearing strange sheep noises around 5am.

Then new mum Amy opened her front door to collect milk from her doorstep and was faced with a lamb in her garden.

Police arrived at the scene and placed the sheep in the back of a police van before dropping it off at a nearby farm.

Amy, 28 said: “I don’t know how it got in my garden and I could hear it but couldn’t see it until I opened the door to grab the milk and it was staring me in the face.

"It’s been a very weird morning.”

Gaynor Truby received a call from her daughter Amy before the lamb was ‘taken in for questioning’ by police.

She said: “Amy rang to say she’d found a lamb in her garden, we were laughing and couldn’t believe it so I went down the road to help.

"She said she had heard baa noises in the night and her husband told her to stop being daft.

"I’m glad the lamb is safe now.”

The lamb was trying to get out of the garden when police arrived.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “It’s been an unbaa-lievable morning for some of our officers who were called to the Forbes Terrace area of Sunderland after a neighbour had found a lamb in a garden.

“The lamb appeared distressed and was head-butting the fence, trying to get out of the garden.

“Our officers attended and were able to catch the lamb as it bounded across the front lawn – and it even got a ride in our police van as we dropped it off at a nearby farm.

“After a traumatic morning, it has now been left to graze in the safety of a secure field."

Officers are asking anyone with information about how the lamb came to be in the garden, or who believes it belongs to them to get in touch, quoting log 137 130521.
