Police have launched an investigation over suspected “violent incident” at a restaurant in the city.

Detectives have launched an appeal for information following a suspected assault at a restaurant in Sunderland.

Officers are carrying out enquiries into an incident that happened at Chilli Mangoes, on Tavistock Place, on the evening of Sunday, May 2 into the morning of Monday, May 3.

It is understood that a man carried out an assault at the premises and left shortly afterwards.

No victims have come forward to report the incident, but police are now looking to ascertain what happened and whether any criminal offences have been committed.

Officers are appealing for any victims of the assault or witnesses to get in touch.

It is believed that the victim would have sustained “significant injuries” in the incident and police have said a lot of witnesses could have seen the assault as it happened in a busy area of the city.

Detective Chief Inspector Sean Mcguigan, of Northumbria Police, said: “We have received intelligence suggesting a violent incident may have happened in that bar and we have launched an investigation.

“We believe that the victim would have had significant injuries.

"And are asking people to think whether they know anybody who received unexplained injuries that night, and if so, to come forward.

“This suspected assault happened in a busy area of the city where we believe a lot of witnesses will have been present and could have seen what happened.

“I am now appealing to anybody who may have been a victim of assault between 10pm on May 2 and 1am on May 3 in that restaurant to come forward and speak to us.

“We also want to hear from anyone who was at the restaurant on that evening in question to get in touch.

"Your information, no matter how insignificant you feel it may be, could be a crucial help to our enquiries.”
