Former Black Cat Love is released by Shrewsbury

Former Sunderland and Manchester United defender Donald Love has been released by Shrewsbury Town.

Love joined Sunderland, thenaPremi­erLeaguecl­ub,on a four-year deal in 2016 alongside his Manchester United team-mate Paddy McNair, for a combined fee of £5.5 million.

Fast forward three seasons and two relegation­s later, and the defender departed the Stadium of Light and joined Shrewsbury Town on a free transfer.

But Sunderland’s League Onerivalsh­avenowconf­irmed that the 26-year-old former Black Cat is one of 12 players to have left Montgomery Waters Meadow following the expiration of their contracts.

"It's one of the toughest decisions you have to make at the end of the season,” Town boss Steve Cotterill explained.

“Especially when the boys have done so well to keep us in the division. I have had some tough days over the last few months, but this has certainly been one of the toughest.

"Explaining to the lads that wearen'tmovingfor­wardwith them isn't easy.”

Meanwhile, Sunderland’s League One play-off final second-leghasanew­kick-offtime.

The clash will now take place on Saturday, May 22, at 3.30 pm.

And excitement is mounting among Sunderland supporters at the prospect of watching their side at the Stadium of Light for the first time since March 7 last year.

An online sale has begun with 2020/21 season ticket holders at the front of the queue. Any left will be sold to 2021/22 season ticket holders from this morning.
