Photographic competition puts city’s history sharply in focus
A photography competition has put some of Sunderland’s historic architecture firmly in focus.
Snappers from across the city submitted their work for the competition, which aimed to showcase the area around BishopwearmouthTownscape Heritage Scheme. This year’s theme was ‘historic architecture’ – and aimed at shining a lightonsomeofthearea’sbeautiful listed buildings.
SimonWoodleywaschosen as the winner for his photo of The Peacock pub.
SecondplacewenttoAdam Appleby for his picture of Sunderland Minster, while third place was Ian Maggiore’s picture of Church Lane.
First prize was a £100 SunderlandGiftCard,withsecond place winning a £75 card and the third place photographer winning £50. The cards can be used at over 140 businesses across the Sunderland area.
The Bishopwearmouth Townscape Heritage Scheme is a heritage-led regeneration programmeinSunderlandcity centre that focuses on repairing historic buildings, improving public spaces and hosting events and activities to promote the history of the area.
The scheme is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Sunderland City Council until 2023.
Cllr Linda Williams, portfolio holder for vibrant city at Sunderland City Council, said: "The area covered by the BishopwearmouthTownscape Heritage Scheme is home to some of Sunderland’s most impressive historic buildings, from Sunderland Minster and the Sunderland Empire Theatre to the fantastic listed pubs ThePeacockandTheDunCow.
"The winning photos are fantastic and show the very best of the scheme’s area."
One of the judges of the competition was Judith Miller, Townscape Heritage Project Officer at Sunderland City Council. She said: "We had some wonderful entries and judging it was a tough job, however, we felt that the beautiful photo of The Peacock really captured the Townscape Heritage Scheme and showcased the best of Sunderland’s historic buildings."
Sunderland City Council was awarded £1.9million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the Bishopwearmouth Townscape Heritage Scheme in 2018.
