New Year home would be the cat’s whiskers

Animal rescue workers on Wearside are looking for a New Year home for their longest term resident.

Five-year-old black and white cat Flash is facing his second New Year in the care of the RSPCA at its animal centre at Felledge, at Chester Moor.

Flash was rescued in May 2019, as part of an RSPCA investigation and has been looked after at the centre while the long-running probe continued.

The investigation ended on November but, so far, there have been no takers for the long-term resident.

Catherine Neasham, Felledge cattery supervisor. said: “Although we adore him, we were thrilled when his case concluded earlier this year and we were able to put him up for adoption in November.

"However, he’s had no interest and we’ve not received a single application to give him a home which is heartbreaking.”

She added: “When Flash came into our care he was severely emaciated and very under-socialised.

“He’s spent all this time with us and the team all think the world of him.

"He’s super friendly and very cheeky, but we love to spend time with him.

“We had hoped that after spending so much time with us, he’d finally get a chance to spend this Christmas in a wonderful home surrounded by love and affection but, sadly, that didn’t happen.”

Flash is described as being a very friendly cat who loves to spend time with people.

But his previous life experiences have had an impact on him.

Staff are looking for an experienced cat owner who can help him settle in and give him time to understand that he will be fed regularly and he doesn’t need to worry about stealing it.

They say he can sometimes get overstimulated so will need a home without young children and owners who can give him space while he adjusts after spending so long in the cattery.

Catherine added: “We don’t believe he’s ever been outside before but he loves to explore so it would be nice if he could have a garden to play in, away from any busy roads as he isn’t very streetwise.”
