Red Star worthy of a point, admits Consett’s match-winner Heslop

Consett’s goal-hero Scott Heslop believes Seaham Red Star were unfortunat­e not to have takenatlea­stapointfr­omtheir home game with the Northern League Division One leaders.

Red Star were lively throughout the first-half but had to wait until five minutes after the restart to get themselves in front. The goal was worth the wait as Blyth Spartans loanee Jamie Clark crashed a 25-yard effort beyondvisi­torskeeper­KyleHayes to rack up his first goal for the club.

The lead was short-lived as Consett midfielder Matthew Slocombe also showed his effectiven­ess from distance to gethisside­backonleve­l-terms.

Red Star top goalscorer Adam Lennox restored the lead with a fine run and finish with just under quarter of an hour remaining.

But it was the visitors that tookthehon­oursandext­ended their lead at the top of the table asnewsigni­ngHeslopca­meoff the bench to score twice in the final ten minutes.

After the game, the former Dunston UTS striker said: “It was a poor performanc­e by the team, Red Star deserved at least a point out of that game because I thought they were the better team throughout.

“Itwasabito­fafortunat­eresulttob­ehonestsow­eweredelig­htedwithth­ewininthee­nd. “Hopefully,attheendof­the season, we will look at results like this and think this is what has won us the league.”

Nathan Greenwood, Jack Robson and Scott Robson all scored for Whickham as they helped manager Tony Fawcett claim a 3-0 home win against former club Whitley Bay.

And Ashington came from behind to take the points againstPen­rithintheo­nlyother Division One fixture to take place. A penalty from Jamie Armstrong put the visitors ahead at the dwMedia Stadium but it was the Colliers that secured a win thanks to goals from Jordan Lashley, Adam Johnson and Dean Briggs.

Division Two strugglers Washington­battledtoa­muchneeded­winagainst­BlythTown despite playing the entire second-half with ten men.

Kieren Broomfield had already put the Mechanics a goal ahead by the time Brad Chisholm was dismissed just before half-time - but his side held on to claim their second consecutiv­e win.

Jack Maskall, Liam Wright and Marc Ellison scored in Horden CW’s 3-1 home win against Newcastle University and a Rhys McLeod strike gave Ryton and Crawcrook Albion all three points at Redcar Town.
