Durham beat Derbyshire to reach Balcomb semi-finals

The Durham county Balcomb squad secured a place in the regional semi-finals after a decisive 43-28 win over Derbyshire at York RI.

Blackhall Bandits' Paul Hartley steered Jordan Harston(Spennymoor),Jaxon McKenna and Gary Farquhar (both Silksworth Pumas) to a comprehens­ive 26-8 win over Dan Thornhill.

The other rink of Mark Hodgson (Elm Tree), Ian Jackson (Blackhall Bandits), Mark Higgins (Seaham Town) and David Bolt (Silksworth Pumas) trailed 18-11 before Bolt rallied to get back to within three shots to finish 20-17 down. In the regional semifinal Durham will face either Lancashire or Yorkshire at Dunnington on July 17.

Durham are in Middleton Cup action today as they head to York to face Lancashire.

In the Northern Trophy, Durham’s women suffered a 21-shot loss at the hands of Cumbria at Horden. Sunderland’s Lorraine Breheny maintained her unbeaten campaign with a 13-11 win, but there were defeats for the Dairy Lane duo of Norma Stephenson­andJoanRod­gerson. Durham face Yorkshire next on July 1 at Lyndhurst.

In the men’s county competitio­ns,second-stageplace­s were on offer in both the triples and fours. In the triples, David Armstrong won an allDairy Lane clash 22-9 against Dale Oram. Barnes Park’s Bryan Sanderson beat Pelton Fell’s Phil Stoker 24-14. However, New Herrington’s Colin Watsonsawh­isruncomet­oan end 17-13 at Dunston against Alan Jobling. Two Silksworth squads got through; Neal Ridley beat Marine’s Peter Thomson 19-9 and David Bolt beat Seaham Town’s Bryan Henderson 19-10. Whitburn’s Derek Wilson lost at home 224 to Pelton Fell’s Jim Hutchinson and Sunderland's Dennis New also lost at home 18-14 to Jarrow West End’s Mal Johnston.

In the fours it was a mixed night for New Herring ton, Colin Watson pulling off a cracking 20-8 win at Dairy Lane against David Armstrong but Barry Thomas well beaten at home 32-7 by Dairy Lane’s Mal Peach. The former national champions came unstuck as Pelton Fell’s Jim Hutchinson beat the Pumas David Bolt 18-13. There was better news for the Pumas as Paul Baker beat Lyndhurst’s Frank Close 22-13. Seaham Town’s Bryan Henderson lost at home 17-8 against Leadgate’s Garry Robson and Whitburn’s Derek Wilson went down 18-12 at Jar row West End. Dairy Lane’ s Dale Oram lost 21-16 at Dunston against Alex Bryden, and Barnes Park’s Bryan Sanderson lost 14-12. Marines Peter Thomson booked a second stage spot with a 24-15 win over Jarrow’s J.Cullen.

The first round of the two bowl singles saw defeats for David Sykes (Pumas), Mal Peach, Dale Oram and Ron Dixon (all Dairy Lane). Barnes Park’s Bryan Sanderson had a good 17-10 win at Jarrow West End, and there was a Pumas double, Neil Reid beating Cons et t’ sPe te rHudspe th 16-12 and Scott Baker beating Lyndh ur st youngster Will Wye 17-5. Marine’s Peter Thomson rounded up the local wins with a 17-9 win at Pelt on Fell against Brian Brown.

In the women’s competitio­ns singles, the only local hope left is Sunderland’s Lorraine Breheny after a 21-16 win at Darlington South Park; in the last eight Breheny will beat home against D arlingtonS­outh Park' s Ca role Wade. Dairy Lane’s Susan Forster lost at home 21-10 to White le Head’ s Ann Bag gett,andRok er Marine’s Carolyn Barthram also lost 21-14 at Durham City against Pauline Charleton.

In the pairs, Dairy Lane’s Joan Rodgers on booked a last eightspot with a 23-16 win over Marine’s Carolyn Barthram. Club mate Norma Stephen son also booked a last-eight place with a 22-7 win over Whitburn’s Vicky Happer.

Darlington South Park’s Kimberley Robinson completed an under -25 county double after adding the singles title to the pairs. In an all-South Park final, Robinson beat club mate SophieWood­s21-12;bothplayer­s will head to the national championsh­ips at Leamington Spa in late August.

In the Bowls England competitio­ns, Barnes Park’s Bryan Sanderson lost 21-12 in the over-55 singles to Lyndhurst’s Paul Langley. The Pumas' Gary Farquhar beat Jarrow West End’s Jean Clift 20-11 in the mixed pairs, and Marine’s Rod Maxwell also progressed to the next round beating Hun den’s Iain Pr entice 17-10. In the double fours, Dairy Lane beat Stockton 46-24 and will be away to either Spennymoor or Marine next.

In the Storey Bowl, holders Seaham Town whitewashe­d Houghton Town 7-0 while Hetton Workmen’s hit Thompson Park for a ton in a 7-0 win, while the remaining game b et weenHyl ton Collier y and New Herrington ended in a thrilling draw 65-65.

The Earl Premier has new leaders, Dairy Lane’s 6-1 win over Barnes Park coupled with Marine’s 7-0 drubbing at the hands of Silksworth moving the Lane to the top by a point.

In the Earl, Division One holders Sea ham Town maintained their 100 percent recordwith a fourth 6-0 win over North Biddick. Usworth are also unbeaten after a 6-0 win against Houghton Town. The other game saw Washington get their first win 5-1 at home against Hylton Colliery. In Division Two, Thompson Park lead the pack after a 5-1 win at Ryhope and there were 6-0 wins for New Herrington and Whitburn Community.

Barnes Park’s 5-1 win at Seaham Town cements their place at the top of the Swan Division One. Roker Marine had a cracking 5-1 win at holders Dairy Lane and South Hylton’s5-1winendedt­hePumas' unbeaten record. Usworth sneaked home 49-46 at home against North Biddick.
