Recycling firm steps in to help after raid on social enterprise
A kind-hearted local business has come to the aid of Sunderland-based social enterprise after a break-in at their premises.
Media Savvy, which is based in Norfolk Street, lost 20 laptops, 12 tablets and a range of high-end camera equipment in the raid last month – but Wearsidebased technology recycling firm Rebuyer have come to its aid by replacing the computers and pitching in with extra electronic equipment to get the company back on track.
Media Savvy specialises in developing digital skills and employment opportunities among people with specialist needs, including military veterans and exoffenders in the Wearside area.
The raid had a major effect on its work – leaving it to deliver their regular services.
After hearing about the break-in, Simon Howatson, CEO of Rebuyer – which started life six years ago to champion the circular economy – came up with the donation which enabled Media Savvy to get back in business.
Media Savvy director, Dan Makaveli, said “It’s difficult to find the words needed to say thank you to Simon and his team at Rebuyer.
"The break-in had a huge impact on us and it’s been a challenging period trying
to meet the needs of our service users which go far beyond digital skills. “Many
rely on us as a regular part of their routine and we work hard to make sure none are
left socially isolated whilst providing a safe space for many to get out the house and learn new skills."
Rebuyer specialises in taking used computers and other equipment, refurbishing it and selling it on – splitting the profit with the original owner.
This gives the equipment a longer lifespan and cuts down on ‘e-waste’.
Mr Howatson said: “As soon as we heard the news about Media Savvy, we knew we wanted to help. The work and support they provide around Sunderland and beyond is a lifeline to so many of the people who use their services.
"Thanks to our own supporters and our amazing hard working team we were fortunate to be in a position where we could offer assistance and we are just glad we could help.”
