Prince should stay silent

- Bob Swallow, sent via via email.

Am I the only person getting fed up of hearing Prince Harry whinging about all that is wrong with his family?

Here we are with folk struggling just to survive, and he and his wife are making possibly millions from this minor domestic crisis.

Thinking about his comments regarding his part in the war in Afghanistan and how many Taliban he thinks he has killed, my dad fought in the First World War around Arras, Passchendale and Ypres.

Like so many of that time he never spoke about his experiences until one day, when I was just 16, I tackled him about them.

There was a long silence, then he said: “I will just tell you of one thing that happened to me then that is it. It was winter and I was separated from my mates in the cold and dark. I took shelter in a shell hole snuggling up to a recently deceased body to get some warmth.”

I thought about this then asked him: “Dad, what happened when it went cold?” Silence, then looking at me as though I was an idiot. “I left it, of course, and found another.” I never mentioned it again.

There is nothing to glory in war. If you need any further evidence of this, go on a tour of the First World War battlefields in France and Belgium.

Some of the beautifully tended graves, may be half a dozen in a small copse, others are so vast they just stretch into the distance.

There is nothing clever about war and as Churchill once famously said "Jaw jaw is far preferable to war war” think on that, Prince Harry, and in the meantime give our Royal Family a rest. Sensibly, in my view, they make no comment.
