Colledge hails a ‘big three points’ as Horden bounce back to victory

-

Horden CW assistant manager Andy Colledge praised his side for their reaction to their midweek defeat at the hands of Bedlington Terriers.

Still stinging from a rare home defeat against the Northumberland outfit in Northern League Division Two, the Marras made their way to Brandon United on Saturday looking to come through a difficult test at the Welfare Ground.

A disciplined display received the maximum reward as first-half goals from Jack Maskell and Barney Dobinson gave them a vital win and left Colledge to praise ‘a big three points’.

He told The Echo: “The lads reacted well from Tuesday’s loss and we did make a few changes just to freshen things up a little.

“To be fair, we controlled the game from the start and it’s a big three points because there were teams around us that have dropped points.”

The win kicked off a big week for Horden as they host local rivals Easington Colliery on Friday night before travelling to Birtley Town eight days later.

One side that did not fall short on Saturday is leaders Boro Rangers after they remained four points clear of Horden with a 4-0 win at Chester-le-Street Town.

Third-placed Bedlington Terriers fell to a 2-0 defeat at Billingham Town thanks to goals from Andrew Nelson and Ben Riding, and Aidan Rutledge’s goal was not enough to spare Birtley Town as they were beaten 2-1 at Redcar Town.

A late brace from Isam Mohamed helped Washington to a 3-0 home win against fellow strugglers Willington in a battle of the division’s bottom two clubs.

Joe Blackborne had opened the scoring for the

Mechanics in first-half injury-time before Mohamed scored twice in the final 10 minutes of the game.

Matthew Wilshaw’s injury-time goal proved to be the difference as Billingham Synthonia inflicted a defeat on Jarrow and Bailey Proudlock’s brace helped Esh Winning to an impressive 3-1 win at Blyth Town.

Chester-le-Street United also enjoyed a fine away day as a Benjamin Shodeinde brace and a goal apiece from Taylor Campbell and Jay Gibson put them on their way to a 4-0 win at Easington Colliery.
