STORY

Building work starts on 265 new homes on the former Sunderland Civic Centre site. Another chapter is beginning in the story of Sunderland's city centre.

Alison Harvey: Always a bit of an odd building but I worked there for a while in the mid 70s so have a bit of a soft spot for it.

Terry Scales: Just wonder who will be getting these houses.

Richard Storey: With the money they used to originally build this they surely could have fixed the old town hall, now they're both piles of rubble.

Lisa Jane: It’s looking better already!

Lee Kennedy: Great for the city. Get people living there and hopefully spending money there.

Alan Smith: The councillors will be able to go to their nice warm office to think of different excuses to put the rates up.

Norman Armour:

Onwards and backwards, if you want a comparison go to Newcastle or Durham, this council has wasted billions over the last 50 years and it's still a dump.

Anthony Stephenson:

Waste of prime land building profiteering there. Could have had a major leisure and recreation or government department relocation there. Missed opportunity. The site has housing on all three sides of it. Some folk are clueless.

Jim Tansey: Nice to see homes being built there. Will suit those working in the City centre.

Sharon Simpson: Offer some for the homeless and give them an address instead of thinking of money.

Bill Edward Meeks: City Hall can be repurposed as a shopping hub, cafes, telesales office space, by that time SCC could move to Doxford Park, or Southwick Riverside or will be working from home? Probably?

Stephen F Lounton:

Who will be able to afford them?

Brenda Berry: Not before time.
