Waco: American Apocalypse (Netflix, from March 22)
It has been thirty years since 86 people died after a 51-day bloody siege of a compound belonging to the religious Branch Davidians movement in Waco, Texas. To commemorate this disturbing anniversary, a new, three-part documentary series tells the definitive account of what happened and how the group’s leader David Koresh – who took control of the sect, claiming to be its final prophet – was eventually taken down following allegations of polygamy and child sexual abuse. Featuring unseen news footage and
FBI interviews, the series hears from both sides of the conflict as director Tiller Russell attempts to put together the missing pieces to give us an informative and immersive docuseries.
The Night Agent (Netflix, from March 23)
A tempting new action-thriller series created by Shawn Ryan, and based on the novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk. It stars Gabriel Basso as Peter Sutherland, a lowly FBI agent who has a less-than-glamorous job by Bureau standards: working in the basement of the White House, his role is to keep watch over a phone that never rings. Until, one night, it does… Suddenly Sutherland finds himself thrust into a farranging conspiracy involving a Russian mole who is working in the highest levels of the US government. A strong supporting cast, including DB Woodside (Lucifer), Luciane Buchanan (Filthy Rich) and Hong Chau (Watchmen TV series), makes this worth a look.
My Kind of Country (Apple TV, from March 24)
Apple TV have quality in their originals (Ted Lasso, Slow Horses et al) but are now starting to recognise that, in order to truly compete with the more established streaming giants, they need breadth. For example, they have no competition series – until now. My Kind of Country is a global search for a new, refreshing, unconventional and extraordinary voice in country music. Rather than borrowing too heavily from existing formats, MKoC stands out by presenting itself as part documentary, part talent contest. This hybrid series contains real insight into the artists and genres featured, and is helmed by none other than Reese Witherspoon and Kacey Musgraves – with expert talent-scouting nous coming courtesy of Jimmie Allen, Mickey Guyton and Orville Peck.
