Lay: We must keep hitting those standards to end season on high
Farringdon Detached secured one of their best wins of the season as they saw off titlechasing Durham Corinthians in the Wearside League.
Despite having a skeletal squad available due to injury and unavailability, Liam Lay’s side eased to all three points with a dominant display against Corinthians, who are third in the table.
Josh Wilde continued his fine form in front of goal as he led the way with a brace and Rob Thompson also found the net to give their side – who are seventh in the table – a fully deserved win.
Even a late consolation goal from Josh Keys could not take the shine off the result for Farringdon manager Lay, who believes his side set the standard for the remainder of the season.
He said: “We dominated the game and we out-battled them right the way through.
“It’s been an up-anddown season but the lads have to keep hitting the standard they set between now and the end of the season because we want to end the season strongly.”
There were several postponements on Saturday afternoon but two other league games did escape the rainy conditions.
Richmond Town moved into the top eight with a 3-1 win at Annfield Plain, who stand third bottom in the rankings.
Michael Connelly scored for the hosts but Chris Hope,
Sam Pickersgill and Edward Lewington found the net to earn the points for the North Yorkshire outfit.
Gateshead Leam Rangers moved three points clear at the top of the table despite
having to settle for a share of the spoils with a 1-1 draw in their visit to Durham United, who are sixth, seven points ahead of Farringdon Detached.
Second-placed FC Hartlepool
– who have a game in hand on the league leaders – secured their place in the final of the Shipowners Charity Cup after they came through a tough test in a derby clash with Hartlepool
Pools Youth.
Dean Cope and Luke Naylor put Terry Hill’s men in control with two firsthalf goals and they held on for the three points despite Tom Windsor reducing the arrears.
They will face either Darlington Town or Darlington RA in the final, with the two local rivals set to meet in the other last four tie next month.
