CELEBRATION time as town marks St George’s

- By DAN NEWBOULD News Reporter St George’s Day 2024 in Tamworth.

THOUSANDS packed into Tamworth Castle Grounds for the “amazing” annual St George’s Day event.

The free festival, one of the highlights of Tamworth Borough Council’s calendar of outdoor events, took place on Saturday, April 20.

Estimated crowds of more than 12,000 people enjoyed the medieval-themed fun and festivities on offer such as jousting, a living history camp, stalls and children’s activities.

The Grand Medieval Joust was back by popular demand. Festival-goers watched the action unfold as St George competed with knights on horseback and they took to the main arena to show off their jousting skills.

For the second year running, to accommodate the crowds, the event was held in the main Castle Grounds arena by the playground.

A first for this event was the Community Games, offering everyone opportunities to try new sporting activities from local providers, in a fun and safe environment.

Other entertainment and activities for the whole family included displays, a medieval encampment, living history demonstrations evident during the period, a large array of traditional children’s games, plus refreshment and gift stalls.

Stephen Gabriel, chief executive of Tamworth Borough Council, said: “What an amazing day in the Castle Grounds. While still ‘big coat’ weather, we were delighted that the sun was shining.

“As new chief executive, this was my first St George’s Day in Tamworth, and what an event it was. It was amazing to see so many people enjoying themselves.

“Staff from across the council work hard to make sure this free event continues to delight visitors every year. The teamwork that goes into the event, really helps make it a tremendous success.

“I’m proud we partnered with the Community Games, showcasing local sporting opportunities for everyone to increase their activity.

“I want to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in making our St George’s Day celebration a success and to all visitors who came to join in the fun.”
