Fans invited to have say on new Boro club badge

MIDDLESBROUGH have announced plans to introduce a new club crest in line with the upcoming 150th anniversary of the club – and they will be inviting supporters to get involved with the process.

The current crest has been in use since May 2007, replacing the one that was introduced after the club was saved from liquidation in 1986.

With that former badge acknowledging the year the club was saved, owner Steve Gibson said back in 2007 that the current badge was designed to celebrate the fact that Middlesbrough is one of the oldest football clubs in the world, having been formed in 1876.

That makes the 2026-27 season the club’s 150th anniversary and the club will introduce a new crest as part of their anniversary celebrations.

The new crest will be used from that season onwards. The current crest has proven divisive among supporters, and the club’s statement acknowledged the crest is a ‘representation of our club and matters hugely to Boro supporters.’ With that in mind, Boro have said that they want supporters to be heavily involved in the process of introducing the new badge.

They plan to ‘invite contributions from external design experts,’ and ‘recognise that this process requires due care, consideration, and clear communication.’

That is why they have announced their plans now, to try to deliver what they call ‘the desired outcome for our supporters.’ Lee Fryett, Boro’s chief commercial officer, said: “We’re excited to announce our intentions as we approach a significant milestone in Middlesbrough FC’s history.

“Any crest that is adopted must represent that proud history and what the club means to our supporters, as well as our vision for the future.

“We’re looking forward to working closely with the fans throughout the process.”

More details around this project and how supporters and other contributors can get involved will follow in due course, the club said.
