Big Arran Challenge is back next weekend
Glasgow City Mission’s Big Arran Challenge is set to return to the island next weekend – and it is urging members of the public to get outdoors to raise vital funds for its work.
The Big Arran Challenge will see participants climb Goatfell before cycling 57 miles around Arran’s stunning coastline. For those preferring a slightly smaller Big Challenge, cycle-only or hike-only options also exist.
The event is now its fourth year and has raised thousands of pounds for the mission, which works with people who are homeless and disadvantaged. Money raised by the event will fund its vital evening drop-in work where people can receive a hot meal and much needed help and advice.
Blackwaterfoot resident Charlotte Weir is among the charity’s 200-strong army of volunteers. She said: ‘As a volunteer, I look forward to the privilege of helping every Friday at this very worthy organisation, one which gives practical, physical and spiritual support to vulnerable people of all backgrounds and creeds.
‘I’m delighted Glasgow City Mission is coming back to Arran. The event always draws people to the island, which is good for our local economy but, more than that, I know what a difference it will make. If anyone would like to support us on Saturday June 11 by taking part in the cycle or climb, please get in touch.’
Graham Steven, partnerships and communications manager said: ‘The Big Arran Challenge is one of our most popular fundraising events. As well as providing a lot of fun and a great day out, the money raised makes a big difference to those in need in our city – those who have hit rock bottom. We’re really looking forward to returning to Arran as we’re always greeted with a warm welcome. The feedback we receive too from our participants is just how stunning the island’s scenery is. For many, this is their first opportunity to come and sample a little of what the island has to offer.’
The Big Arran Challenge will take place on Saturday June 11, starting from the Ormidale Pavilion in Brodick. In return for sponsorship, participants will receive their ferry ticket, refreshments, hot showers and a bike support team.
