Cyclist visits island on 1,500-mile journey in aid of Alzheimer’s

-

A cyclist from Widnes who is undertaking a 1,500-mile trip to the Shetland Islands, and back again, has included Arran on his route as he takes on the monumental challenge in aid of Alzheimer’s Scotland.

Keith Pearson, 57, started his journey on Wednesday May 11 and completed the 300-mile journey to Arran in six days on his ICE recumbent bike. Weighing only 16kg before his possessions are loaded onto it, the trike is a state-of-theart three-wheeler that carries his tent, a stove and a few other small items which are the bare minimum needed since Keith is travelling solo and has no support team with him.

Challenge

The challenge is something that means a great deal to Keith as, having worked with people with dementia and after seeing the devastating effects that the condition had on his father-in-law, he decided that something needed to be done.

After spending two days on Arran, Keith was heading over to Kintyre, on to Oban and then to Fort William before continuing north towards Shetland. But the itinerary can change as he admits: ‘I am attracted to places that are out there, places that are unusual and the road less travelled. I have food, water and confidence.’

If you would like to contribute towards Keith’s fundraiser, he has a Justgiving page which is at www. justgiving.com/Keith-Pearson5 where he has already raised £2,180 of the £2,500 target and for updates on his journey, his Facebook page can be found at www. facebook.com/keith.pearson.9400.
